Billionaire oil tycoon Harold Hamm’s pending divorce from wife Sue Ann is expected to go down as the most costly divorce settlement of all time.
As one of America’s wealthiest and most influential businessmen, the CEO of Continental Resources is worth more than $11 billion, but he may have to say goodbye to half of his fortune.
Why? His estranged wife held key positions at Continental Resources and helped Hamm build it into the multi-billion-dollar business it now is. Joint business ventures play a major role when courts decide how to divvy up finances.
Documents in the case are sealed, but in one filing obtained, Sue Ann Hamm alleges Harold was having an affair, prompting her to later file for divorce. Whether a prenuptial agreement was signed is unclear. Legal analysts reviewing court filings said that without one, the case could lead to a record-breaking financial settlement for a divorce. One outcome would be a “marital property” split, which could include dividing Harold Hamm’s controlling 68 percent stake in Continental, currently worth $11.2 billion.
Harold founded Continental Resources in 1967. He and Sue Ann were married in 1988 and she worked for Continental, including establishing the company’s oil and gas marketing groups.
