Assembly bill 43, known as the “Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Protection Act” recently passed the California Senate Judiciary Committee.
The bill, which was presented by assembly member Mark Leno, marks the fifth time in six years that the California Legislature will debate the topic of same-sex marriage.
What Will the Bill Do?
Assembly 43 aims at ending the exclusion of same-sex couples from the protections and responsibilities associated with same-sex marriage.
With the governor’s approval, the bill would modify sections of the California Family Code changing statements like “marriage is between a man and a woman” to reflect that it is between “two people.”
The bill was reintroduced by Leno after a trial court found the ban of same-sex marriage to be unconstitutional.
Bill Advances
After years of debate, this reintroduction provides those in domestic partnerships with new hope regarding the future of same-sex marriage in California.
The California Senate Judiciary Committee voted three to one in favor of assembly 43.
“LGBT Californians want the choice to marry so that we can live our lives with the same dignity and freedom that everyone deserves,” says the Director for Equality in California, Geoff Kors.
