The marine sergeant accused of plotting to kidnap and kill a man in Iraq is pleading with court officials to let his jury hear classified information that he believes will benefit his case.
However, the military judge assigned to the case questions the relevance of the information in regards to the sergeant’s case.
Classified Information
Sgt. Lawrence Hutchins is one of eight Camp Pendleton soldiers accused of kidnapping Hashim Ibrahim Awad from his home on April 26, 2006.
After the soldiers took the man down a deserted road they allegedly shot him and staged the scene so he looked like an insurgent who was planting a bomb.
Sgt. Hutchins has been charged with conspiracy, kidnapping and murder in relation to the death of Awad Iraqi man.
The military intelligence and defense attorneys discussed disclosing the information behind closed doors this past week so the content of this information is still unknown to the judge and other officials.
Why Not Reveal the Information?
An intelligence officer recently took the stand to speak against the public disclosure of the documents.
Angered about the debate he sternly stated that, “There’s a plethora of items there that would threaten national security and could reveal our capacity to find the enemy.”
