Weeks before Election Day, supporters of Proposition 8 in California are gearing up to persuade voters to ban same-sex marriage.
This will mark the first time voters will be asked to voice their opinions in a state where same-sex couples have already won the right to legally marry.
Controversy Over Same-Sex Marriage
In California there are an estimated 15, 000 backers of Proposition 8, the majority of them being members of Mormon, Catholic and Christian churches.
The initiative would turn over the Supreme Court’s Decision to legalize same-sex marriage in California.
“Unless the people are angry,” says Ron Prentice, director of the coalition of religious and social conservative groups, “nothing will happen. We are going to change the Constitution and say in November, ‘Judges, you can’t touch this.’ ”
The campaign’s goal is reportedly to get supporters and voters who aren’t aware or haven’t made a decision on the ongoing debate.
Group Attempts to Win Votes
Members of the group for Proposition 8 are supposedly handing out information to better educate voters on Proposition 8.
However, seeing as there are many Gay rights advocates and groups, along with heterosexuals throughout the state who agree with same-sex marriage, those protesting the new law will may have to do more than hand out pamphlets.
“My biggest surprise is the indifference there is,” states Al Almendariz, a supporter of Proposition 8.
